Peer: Bad teacher [2011]

15-92mins-comedy-17th June 2011

Elizabeth Halsey (Cameron Diaz) has somehow found himself as a school teacher during his life, when all she wants to make Grab a man with plenty of money to provide for her. With her former fiancé having worked out the truth and ditching her, Elizabeth has to go back and teach for another school year, much to his frustration. Not only has she to teach children, but also has to keep the principal (John Michael Higgins) and goody two shoes teacher Amy Squirrel (Lucy Punch) from her back while constantly obvious off gym teacher's (Jason Segel) advances.

Things begin to look up, and then when she discovers new substitute teacher Scott Delacorte (Justin Timberlake) are sitting on a family's fortune. But Elizabeth has competition from the ever perky/mentally unstable sets Amy so that to get money for a boob jobs that will be sure to win over Scott and his money. Confrontations get even more extreme when Elizabeth discovers there is a cash prize for the teacher, who achieves the best academic results.

Timberlake shows again that he is more than apt in the role of a dorky nerd with its transitions to the screen, far more impressive than some other wanna be pop star players out there. During the film, there was a moment when I trøde, they would have him sing correctly but fortunately he understands that rip on even very good. I'm still not sure about most of his laugh comes from the fact that the audience knows he is Justin Timberlake and he does strange things or whether it is because of his character. I am inclined to say it earlier, but he was still laughing.

The others did their job with nothing spectacular but no clothes either. Special credit goes to Phyllis Smith, who plays Lynn introvert teacher who always pushed around and Segal who have performance deserved more time on the screen. It would also be a Diaz film, if there was no point in which she lost a few layers, and despite being just shy of the big four o she sure knows how to withdraw from a car wash scene.

There was something with the soundtrack which I liked as well. It fits the mood and feeling, gave this scheming was apparently when Diaz or Punch was on the screen.

Bad teacher impresses more than I trøde it would with a combination of over the top characters that play off each other well and more cringe worthy moments at the forefront of the grinning stakes (in fact I laughed quite a few times). Sure there were some jokes that don't quite make the cut for me and go back to toilet humor appeared a few times, but these instances were few and far between. It is certainly better than the long list of mediocre comedies that has shown so far this year (Hall Pass, The hangover, part II, The Dilemma) and is certainly worth a watch.

Rating: (B)-
